My final hyperessay will outline the goals and importance of the People for Ethical Treatment of Animals, commonly known as PETA, and how it makes use of social media in order to work towards its goals. As an activist group that fights for animal rights in the current age, PETA makes great use of Facebook, Twitter, and other social media sites to spread the message to thousands of people across the world.
Furthermore, PETA is a very confrontational organizational that raises many controversial issues to the public. One of the founders, Ingrid Newkirk even said that it is the duty of PETA members and supporters to be in the center of the media so that their ideology spreads. In my final hyperessay, I will first identify the origins and goals of PETA and then go further into detail about some of the cases that they have been involved with, including any major events in Animal Rights Legislation. I will also try to discuss the support and criticism against PETA while providing counter-points against the criticism. In addition, I will further analyze PETA’s use of social media in order to help it spread information and attract new members. Lastly, I will discuss how PETA intends to increase its base by targeting different age groups and discuss the future of PETA over the next decade.
PETA is an activist group that is important to me because I believe in its values and message and want everyone else to understand the importance of protecting animal rights because that is the first step to ensuring human rights as well. If we can’t even treat our fellow animals that inhabit this earth with decency then maybe we can’t treat each other with respect either.
